But I bring that up because, you know, dj, you know, wackademics, or he kind of bought, quote, unquote, hip hop media to task. I really don't even want to give him any light, but. Or journalism, rather to task on investigating Roc Nation and how they are. How Roc Nation, I guess, is blocking every. Or has a smear campaign online smear campaign against Drake and. And things like that. So let me say this. They probably do okay. It's a huge media and entertainment tycoon conglomerate, if you will. I guess tycoon is like one person maybe, or a man, but conglomerate, yes. They have. They have systems in place more than likely to make your life very difficult the way that. That all media places do. Like my news voice, but yeah. So what essentially happened? Stephen A. Was given this thumbs down award from the NABJ with regards to how he speaks about black women in public or in the media. I'll say the award can be seen as classless. The ward has existed prior to Stephen A. However. What a great way to protect black woman. I'll be honest with you. That is a awesome. I didn't know. You know what I'm saying, House? Because Stephen A. Does take a shit shots, y'. All. Let's be honest. He does. So Stephen A, first of all, made an ego and the hubris never break us apart. However, his ego, his hubris, his pride, all of that stuff puts him in a group of brothers, you know, men that I'm disappointed in. I'll say, frankly, my disappointment lies because I probably once admired or loved these men. But where that pride has forced them, or it's not even pride, but the thirst for clicks and views and virality has forced these brothers to always respond and respond publicly to any kind of criticism. And in the response, the responses are always defensive. It's never a response of any accountability. It. This is the world that we're living in right now. If you are in a relationship with someone, and then once you get into an argument with someone with that said someone, they bring up something that's a low blow or something from five years prior or whatever that you thought that y' all had been gotten over and stuff, then is. It seems to me, and it appears to me that he has this Trump, like, way of looking for the loyalty in people where they cannot call him out or hold him accountable for anything that he does or says. And, you know, again, I don't. I don't. I don't rock with that. So when any of these young ladies, Jamel Hill, Joy Reid, Carrie Champion, all of these black women in media spaces have called him out. He's had an issue with it and gone back and forth. One of the. One of the early tenants that we've had on this platform is not to even go back and forth in. No women coming. You heard? That's just how we coming out here. Pause. You know what I'm saying? Pardon the left, but this Negro, he'll. He'll go back and forth with a woman. Same thing with academics. You see these, like, threads of commonalities with these people that I'm having issues with, y' all spiritual wickedness. You feel me? Because what about your pride, your ego. Excuse me? What about your pride of your ego where you have to respond to everything we think that we thought that you was, you know, high on your horse. So one of the main things he responded about is that he's had, I believe he bought first take to the NABJ conference or like reported live from there again. And he feels like they have a close relationship. So I understand him being hurt by the report that he feels like they have have but I am 1000% rocking with them, holding him accountable and at the same time looking to protect black women. Let's go to what Stephen A. What what was his response? Not only did he respond on his own platform, of course to garner more views and more attention, but not hold himself accountable. The brother went to Fox News, y'. All. So Stephen A. Goes to sit down across from Sean Hannity. He strongly rejected the NABJ's decision to give him the thumbs down award. He called the accusation a flat out lie. I don't know how you can call an award a lie or I guess the accusations from the basis of the award he's saying is a flat out lie and defended his treatment of black woman by mentioning the black woman in his own life. I was raised by five black women, Smith said. My mother, God rest her soul in four older sisters, have two daughters. I have 10 nieces. I don't know what the hell they're talking about. Smith's appearance Monday night on Hannity was another step in a tense public dispute between one of America's most well known black media figures and the country's largest group of black journalists. Fox News confirmed Smith went on the show to respond to the NABJ award and Smith. Smith has called the organization action, the organization's action a hit job. However, Smith's decision to make his case on Hannity's show of course led to more criticism. Bro, I don't know what what is that move land. But anyways, some argue that choosing this platform only supported the concerns and ABJ raised has raised. So he gets called out by the NABJ in the first place that he goes to is Fox News. Lord have mercy. That's what an X user or let's call it Twitter. Mom named Twitter. We gonna call it Twitter. That's what a Twitter user wrote. So yeah, another was just a little bit more profane with their response. Another X user. Let's see here. Let's get the button ready. So Stephen A. Smith, you ran your to the white power hour TV show to complain just like we thought you would. Similar criticism appeared online Tuesday. Some people wonder why Smith, who already has large platforms, chose Hannity show to address a dispute with black journalists. The controversy started in Atlanta when NABJ gave out its annual Thumbs down award at its convention. Smith received the award along with FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. So you wasn't the only one, Steve. You heard CBS News, the Washington Post and Circle City broadcasting President and CEO Dejuan McCoy. So NABJ's criticism of Smith was especially direct. Smith has established a recurring public pattern of disparaging commentary. Hold on, y' all part of self. Smith has established a recurring public pattern of disparaging commentary directed at prominent black women across politics, politics, sports and media, the organization said in his citation. NABJ says such commentary reinforces harmful narratives and undermines fair representation of black women, putting Smith's conduct at odds with the organization's commitment to responsible portrayals of black communities, protecting black women and protecting the black community. He's criticized U.S. rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas, including questioning her political rhetoric and use of street verbiage. He publicly sparred with former MSNBC host Joy Ann Reid. He objected to Michelle Obama's argument during the 2024 campaign about the consequences for women of returning Donald Trump to the White House. And he has also repeatedly criticized former Vice President Kamala Harris, including after her unsuccessful presidential campaign. Smith says these examples are disagreements, not insults. Whether it was Jasmine Crockett, whether it was Kamala Harris, whether it was Michelle Obama. I pointed to something that they said that I may have disagreed with, smith told Hannity. That is all. No, I've had a difference of opinion about something that they may have said and that is all. Smith pointed to his impeding September 29th induction into the Broadcasting, Cable Broadcasting and Cable hall of Fame and question why his professional accomplishments apparently carry so little weight with nabja. What have I accomplished in my career? See, here we go. Ego and pride, y'. All. Hubris alert. Hubris alert. My fault, y'. All. Hubris alert. What have I accomplished in my career? Smith asked. Where am I sitting at right now? NABJ's response was that being successful does not protect anyone from criticism. Come on, Ex Black. I got the button for that. Hold on, Ex Blackley. [00:59:21] Speaker B: Speaking at the award ceremony, NABJ President Aaron Haynes said the decision to name Smith was about public accountability, including when that accountability involves people the organizationally organization has previously embraced. Okay, we are here to defend the truth, haynes said. And that means telling it even when the truth makes our friends uncomfortable, especially them. For nabj, Haynes said, the hope of calling out Smith and the other individuals and entities is to work toward positive progress. The door is open, she continued. The conversation is available and the opportunity to change is real. But NABJ will not be silent. Not in this moment and not on my watch. Smith's first response was far more excuse me was far from conciliate, conciliatory. This is the epitome of Christmas arriving early, he wrote on X after receiving the award, warning NABJ that it had taken its turn and it and his was coming. I've shut my mouth for years now. Y' all didn't started something. You see what I'm saying? Do y' all hear the spiritual wickedness behind that? If I may? Like why did you got a grudge for years? Or you got certain stuff that you've been holding back and shut your mouth for years about bro and now you ready to and now y' all didn't started something. Come on, man. The dispute became even more heated on Monday when Smith called the award a political and personal hit job. And ABJ disagreed with Smith's version of his talks with Haynes, saying she had been open to a private conversation focused on listening and accountability and had not ruled out a future public discussion. Then it's another oh my gosh, these man. Sorry y', all, I'm a member of another one right here. Then DL Hughley joined the debate. The comedian and social commentator said the issue was bigger than whether Smith could criticize black women. Hugly focused on who Smith chooses uses to challenge how strongly he does it and just as importantly, who he does not challenge. Hugely pointed to Don President Donald Trump's past insult of Smith's intelligence. He then contrasted Smith's response to Trump with the fury he unleashed after NABJ criticized his professional conduct. This is true. Yo, we still got to talk too, on the Q dog stuff. But that's true. What was telling me, maybe he said what was telling to me was the fact that. Fact that he got so angry. Hughley said A Smith's reaction to nabj. These are his contemporaries. These are the people he works with. What he didn't do is when Donald Trump said that he was dumb as a box of rocks. Nothing. Let's see here. Hughley argued that the contrast might explain their decision. Maybe you've got a thumbs down because you're so willing to attack your own and say nothing to the powers that be. He said, you're so willing to attack black athletes but say nothing to a man who insults your intelligence, intellect. Over the years, Smith has had very public arguments with black athletes like Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant, Tarot Owens, LeBron James. He telephone. His televised criticism of former NBA player Kwame Brown became one of his most replayed moments as well. Smith says confrontation is a part of his job. Let's say confrontation with blacks is a part of your job. His career is based on sharing strong opinions, no matter who the subject is. It does matter who the subject is. Let's see here.
